Firearm Purchases

All firearm applications for residents of Little Falls are handled through the Little Falls Police Department Records Bureau. If you need guidance with the application process or have questions, please call 973-774-7867.

In order for you to obtain a firearm, you must meet requirements and comply with the statutes which govern firearms purchases in the State of New Jersey. Additional firearms information can be found at the New Jersey State Police website (www.NJSP.org)

Firearms Application Process and Requirements

The process begins with making an application for a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card. You are required to submit to a background investigation by both state and federal agencies, supply contact information for personal references, be fingerprinted, and consent to a mental health records search.

There are two types of purchase documents in New Jersey – the Firearms Purchaser Identification Card and the Permit to Purchase a Handgun. Applying for both documents can be accomplished by using the same application (Form STS-33).

Applicants should anticipate the process taking approximately thirty days from the date of the receipt of your application. Incomplete or missing information may delay the process, as will the failure of your references to respond in a timely manner.

Application Procedures for Applicants

The State of New Jersey is now accepting applications which are submitted online via FARS. The online application process is designed to be quicker and you will receive automated e-mail updates throughout the FARS process. Until we are notified by the State of New Jersey, we will still be accepting traditional paper applications that can be found at the bottom of this page which MUST BE TYPED. Please note that handwritten applications WILL NO LONGER be accepted. For your convenience, the applications are being provided to you in PDF format. You can complete and print out the application either here or at the New Jersey State Police website.

Online Application Process

Step 1. Visit the FARS website at: https://www.njportal.com/njsp/fars

Step 2. You will need Little Falls’ ORI number (NJ0160500). You WILL NOT be able to complete the FARS online application without our ORI number. If you enter the incorrect ORI number, we cannot correct this error and you will have to reapply.

Step 3. Complete the online application. You may complete the application using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop or desktop computer. When completing the application, you will need an active e-mail address for yourself as will your 2 reputable references (who can be family members). Please fully proofread the entered information at the “Review Screen” portion of your application. Please print out the confirmation pages after your application is electronically submitted.

Note that if this is your first time applying for a Firearm Purchasers Identification Card, you will need to be fingerprinted. After your application is electronically submitted, you will be asked to print out a “New Jersey Universal Fingerprint Form” which is already filled in with your information and follow the instructions provided. If you already possess a Firearms Purchasers Identification Card you will be asked to pay for a Criminal History Record check during the online application process which was traditionally done using form 212A. To complete the Criminal History Records check you will be required to supply your personal information as well as your SBI/FID number. This number can be found on the front of your Firearms Purchasers Identification Card (please see the sample linked here and also below).< /p>

Once your application is completed, please bring a copy of the submission and any confirmation documents you receive. As per NJAC 13-54-1.4, you will be required to pay $5.00 for your initial Firearms Purchasers Identification Card and $2.00 for every Handgun Purchase Permit you request. These fees are non-refundable, and the background investigation will not begin until these fees are received regardless of when your application was submitted. You may pay for these fees by check/money order payable to “The Township of Little Falls” or by cash (exact change only).

Step 4. You will receive an automated e-mail when your application is approved. Once the application is electronically approved, your Firearms Purchasers ID Card and/or Handgun Purchase Permits must still be completed by the police department. Please DO NOT JUST SHOW UP. You will be notified by the police department when your documents are ready to be picked up.

Important Notes

Please advise your references that the FARS system will e-mail them the reference questions to be answered. Your references can complete the questions using a smartphone, mobile device, laptop or desktop computer. Please advise your references to answer the questions as soon as possible to expedite your background investigation.

The online application process is applicant driven. Please ensure you have entered the best phone numbers and e-mail addresses for yourself and your references.
